Taxonomy
Murex acanthopterus was named by Lamarck (1816). It is extant. It is the type species of Pterochelus.

It was recombined as Pterochelus acanthopterus by Jousseaume (1880); it was recombined as Alipurpura acanthoptera by Fischer (1884); it was recombined as Pterynotus (Pterochelus) acanthopterus by Vokes (1970).
