Murex nuttingi was named by Dall (1896). It is extant. Its type specimen is USNM 107372, a shell.

It was recombined as Murex (Murexsul) nuttingi by Clench and Pérez Farfante (1945); it was recombined as Paziella (Dallimurex) nuttingi by Rehder (1946); it was recombined as Poirieria (Paziella) nuttingi by Vokes (1970).
