Murex (Phyllonotus) gatunensis was named by Brown and Pilsbry (1911). Its type specimen is ANSP 1720, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Murex gatunensis by Brown and Pilsbry (1917); it was recombined as Paziella (Panamurex) gatunensis by Woodring (1959); it was recombined as Poirieria (Panamurex) gatunensis by Vokes (1970) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
