Taxonomy
Murex pinnatus was named by Swainson (1822). It is extant. It is the type species of Pterynotus, Pterynotus (Pterynotus).

It was recombined as Pterynotus pinnatus by Vokes (1972); it was recombined as Pterynotus (Pterynotus) pinnatus by Squires and Goedert (1995).
