Taxonomy
Acanthoteuthis was named by Wagner in Munster (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l Sepkoski's reference number: 308]. It is not extant. Its type is Acanthoteuthis speciosa.

It was assigned to Belemnitida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Belemnotheutidae by Doyle and Shakides (2004).
