Ectinochilus olssoni was named by Clark and Durham (1946). Its type specimen is CAS 31694, a partial shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is C.A.S. locality 31694, Colombia, which is in the Bartonian of sandstone Colombia.
