Gerrhosauridae was named by Boulenger (1885). It is extant. Its type is Gerrhosaurus.

It was assigned to Lacertae by Gadow (1898); to Lacertidi by Perrier (1928); to Lacertoidea by Kuhn (1946); to Cordyloidea by Kuhn (1966); to Squamata by Burney et al. (2008); and to Scincoidea by Pyron et al. (2013).

Fosse supratemporale recouverte par des os dermiques. Des pores fémoraux. Exclusivement africains. Prémaxillaires soudés.
