Taxonomy
Chondroteuthis was named by Bode (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l Sepkoski's reference number: 307]. It is not extant. Its type is Chondroteuthis wunnenbergi. It is the type genus of Chondroteuthididae.

It was assigned to Chondroteuthididae by Jeletzky (1966); to Belemnitida by Sepkoski (2002); to Belemnotheutidae by Doyle and Shakides (2004); to Diplobelidae by Fuchs (2012); and to Chondroteuthidae by Fuchs (2019).
