Rotella nana was named by Lea (1833). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Teinostoma nanum by Martin (1904); it was recombined as Teinostoma (Idioraphe) nanum by Gardner (1947); it was recombined as Teinostoma nana by Ward (1998).
