Natica hemicrypta was named by Gabb (1860).

It was recombined as Polynices (Lunatia) hemicrypta by Martin (1904); it was recombined as Polinices hemicrypta by Richards and Harbison (1942) and Richards (1943); it was recombined as Lunatia hemicrypta by Ward (1998).
