Dimitobelus was named by Whitehouse (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,309,1222].

It was assigned to Dimitobelidae by Doyle (1990); and to Belemnitida by Sepkoski (2002).
