Simia hoolock was named by Harlan (1834). It is extant.
It was recombined as Hylobates hoolock by Elliot (1913), Kloss (1929) and Fooden (1969); it was recombined as Hylobates (Bunopithecus) hoolock by Prouty et al. (1983); it was recombined as Hoolock hoolock by Mootnick and Groves (2005) and Thinh et al. (2010).
