Murex fulvescens was named by Sowerby (1834) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Western Atlantic.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is No number, a shell.

It was recombined as Murex (Phyllonotus) fulvescens by Maury (1922); it was recombined as Hexaplex (Hexaplex) fulvescens by Vokes (1968); it was recombined as Murex (Hexaplex) fulvescens by Abbott (1974); it was recombined as Muricanthus fulvescens by Portell et al. (1992).
