Murex textilis was named by Gabb (1873) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Pleistocene; Florida.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 3257, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Murex (Pteronotus) textilis by Dall (1890); it was recombined as Murex (Pteropurpura) textilis by Dall (1892); it was recombined as Murex (Subpterynotus) textilis by Olsson and Harbison (1953); it was recombined as Pterynotus (Pterynotus) textilis by Vokes (1964); it was recombined as Murexiella (Subpterynotus) textilis by Vokes (1968).
