Voluta varricosa was named by Brocchi (1814). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Sveltia.

It was recombined as Cancellaria (Sveltia) varricosa by Petit (1976); it was recombined as Sveltia varricosa by Landau et al. (2012).
