Taxonomy
Sus hydrochaeris was named by Linnaeus (1766) [see ICZN Opinion 1894]. It is extant. It is the type species of Hydrochoerus.
It was recombined as Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris by Hay (1902), Mones and Ojasti (1986) and International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1998); it was recombined as Hydrochoerus hydrochoeris by Prado et al. (1998); it was misspelled as Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris by Salles et al. (2006).
