Palaeoctopus was named by Woodward (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Calais newboldi.

It was assigned to Octopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeoctopodidae by Fuchs et al. (2008).
