Taxonomy
Smilosuchus was named by Long and Murry (1995). It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was synonymized subjectively with Leptosuchus by Irmis (2005).

It was assigned to Rutiodontinae by Long and Murry (1995); to Phytosauria by Nesbitt (2011); and to Leptosuchomorpha by Stocker (2010), Stocker and Butler (2013) and Kammerer et al. (2016).
