Belosepia was named by Bronn (1838) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-m-u Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Belosepiidae.

It was reranked as Sepia (Belosepia) by Gabb (1860).

It was assigned to Sepia by Gabb (1860); to Sepiidae by Schevill (1950); to Belosepiinae by Jeletzky (1966); and to Sepiida by Sepkoski (2002).
