Sepia was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 307]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Sepiidae, Sepiinae.

It was assigned to Sepiidae by Schevill (1950); to Sepiinae by Jeletzky (1966); and to Sepiida by Sepkoski (2002).
