Prismatophyllum brevilamellatum was named by Hill (1936).

It was recombined as Hexagonaria brevilamellata by Hill (1954); it was recombined as Donia brevilamellata by Hill and Jell (1970); it was recombined as Careophyllum brevilamellatum by Brownlaw and Jell (2008).
