Spirula was named by Lamarck (1799) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 307,1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Spirulidae.

It was assigned to Spirulidae by Jeletzky (1966); and to Sepiida by Sepkoski (2002).
