Neotragini was named by Sclater and Thomas (1894). It was considered polyphyletic by Hassanin and Douzery (1999).
It was assigned to Bovidae by Abbazzi et al. (2008); and to Antilopinae by Hassanin and Douzery (1999), Grubb (2001) and Gentry (2010).
