Taxonomy
Actinosepia was named by Whiteaves (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 310,1066]. Its type is Actinosepia canadensis. It is the type genus of Actinosepiidae.

It was assigned to Trachyteuthidae by Waage (1965); to Trachyteuthididae by Jeletzky (1966); to Teuthida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Actinosepiidae by Doyle et al. (1994) and Larson (2010).
