Taxonomy
Enchoteuthis was named by Miller and Walker (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 310]. Its type is Enchoteuthis melanae. It is the type genus of Enchoteuthididae.

It was assigned to Palaeololiginidae by Miller and Walker (1968); to Paleololiginidae by Green (1977); to Teuthida by Sepkoski (2002); to Enchoteuthididae by Larson (2010); and to Enchoteuthidae by Fuchs et al. (2019).
