Lioteuthis was named by Naef (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l Sepkoski's reference number: 307]. It is not extant. Its type is Lioteuthis problematica. It is the type genus of Lioteuthidae.
It was assigned to Lioteuthididae by Jeletzky (1966) and Riegraf (1987); and to Teuthida by Sepkoski (2002).
