Maioteuthis was named by Reitner and Engeser (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-u K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Maioteuthis morroensis.

It was assigned to Plesioteuthididae by Reitner and Engeser (1982) and Engeser and Reitner (1985); and to Teuthida by Sepkoski (2002).
