Coenastraea arabica was named by El-Asa'ad (1991). Its type locality is Safarrat and Huraymilah (Hawtah), Saudi Arabia, which is in an Oxfordian reef, buildup or bioherm framestone in the Hanifa Formation of Saudi Arabia.
