Coenastraea abakkaynata was named by El-Asa'ad (1991). Its type locality is Jabal al Abakhayn (Ulayyah), Saudi Arabia, which is in an Oxfordian/Oxfordian reef, buildup or bioherm framestone in the Hanifa Formation of Saudi Arabia.
