Phragmoteuthidida was named by Jeletzky (1965). It is not extant.

It was corrected as Phragmoteuthida by Jeletzky (1966), Sepkoski (2002), Doguzhaeva et al. (2003) and Nishiguchi and Mapes (2008).

It was assigned to Cephalopoda by Sepkoski (2002); to Coleoidea by Jeletzky (1966), Doyle et al. (1994) and Doguzhaeva et al. (2003); and to Belemnoida by Nishiguchi and Mapes (2008).
