Amphisphaera was named by Haeckel (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 86]. It is extant. Its type is Amphisphaera neptunus. It was considered unknown by Jianbing and Aitchison (2002).

It was assigned to Actinommidae by Jianbing and Aitchison (2002); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002) and Matsuzaki and Suzuki (2014).
