Paleoconus was named by Flower and Gordon (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Paleoconus bakeri.

It was assigned to Aulacocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hematitidae by Nishiguchi and Mapes (2008).
