Rostellaria subpunctata was named by Münster (1844) [Münster in Goldfuss 1826-1844].

It was recombined as Alaria subpunctata by Piette (1864); it was recombined as Dicroloma subpunctata by Gründel (1998); it was recombined as Toarctocera subpunctata by Gründel et al. (2009) and Schulbert and Nützel (2013).
