Avicula inequivalvis was named by Sowerby (1819).

It was recombined as Oxytoma inaequivalve by Waagen (1901) and Krumbeck (1924); it was recombined as Oxytoma inaequivalvis by Borissiak (1909); it was recombined as Oxytoma inequivalve by Cox (1935); it was recombined as Oxytoma (Oxytoma) inequivalvis by Aberhan (1998); it was recombined as Oxytoma inequivalvis by Cox (1965), Hollingworth et al. (1990) and Paredes et al. (2013).
