Arca formosa was named by Sowerby (1833). It is extant.

It was recombined as Arca (Arca) formosa by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was recombined as Anadara (Anadara) formosa by Reinhart (1943); it was recombined as Anadara (Rasia) formosa by Woodring (1973); it was recombined as Anadara formosa by Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).
