Hilgardia was named by Harris (1946) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l T Eo-m-u Sepkoski's reference number: 700,914]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Nuculana (Hilgardia) by Palmer and Brann (1965).

It was assigned to Nuculana by Palmer and Brann (1965); to Nuculanidae by Dockery (1980), Vokes (1980), Moore (1983), Squires (1987) and Squires (2001); to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Veteranellinae by Ayoub-Hannaa et al. (2017).
