Inaequidens was named by Pojeta and Gilbert-Tomlinson (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: O m O Cara-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1046]. Its type is Inaequidens davisi.

It was assigned to Malletiinae by Vokes (1980); to Cardiolariidae by Cope (1997); and to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002).
