Palaeonucula was named by Quenstedt (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi J Tith Sepkoski's reference number: 93,159]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Nucula (Palaeonucula) by Cox (1940); it was reranked as Nuculopsis (Palaeonucula) by Ichikawa (1951); it was reranked as Nuculoma (Palaeonucula) by Freneix (1958).

It was assigned to Nucula by Cox (1940); to Nuculopsis by Ichikawa (1951); to Nuculoma by Freneix (1958); to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Nuculidae by Vokes (1980) and Nützel and Kaim (2014).
