Taxonomy
Asterias stellifera was named by Goldfuss (1833). It is the type species of Asteriaceros.

It was recombined as Sphaerites stelliferus by Fraas (1910); it was recombined as Asteriaceros stelliferum by Valette (1932); it was recombined as Lithaster stelliferus by Hess (1977); it was recombined as Sphaeraster stelliferus by Blake (1984); it was recombined as Asteriaceros stelliferus by Hess (1991) and Villier (2010).
