Phaenodesmia was named by Bittner (1895) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 94]. It is not extant. Its type is Phaenodesmia klipsteiniana.
It was assigned to Malletiinae by Vokes (1980); to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Malletiidae by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).
