Phestioidea was named by Pojeta et al. (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: D l D m Sepkoski's reference number: ZR87]. Its type is Phestioidea obtusa.

It was assigned to Nuculanidae by Pojeta et al. (1986); and to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002).
