Taxonomy
Mactra elegans was named by Sowerby (1825) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Panama, Ecuador, Peru.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Mactra (Harvella) elegans by Gray (1853); it was recombined as Mactrella (Harvella) elegans by Anderson (1929); it was recombined as Harvella elegans by Olsson (1964), Woodring (1982) and Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012).
