Echinosphaeraster scutatus
Taxonomy
Asterias scutata was named by Goldfuss (1833). Its type specimen is at the Museum für Natukunde, Berlin and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Echinosphaeraster.
It was recombined as Sphaerites scutatus by Quenstedt (1852), Quenstedt (1858), von Zittel (1876), von Zittel (1883), Fraas (1886), Schöndorf (1906) and Fraas (1910); it was recombined as Sphaerites scutata by Quenstedt (1876); it was recombined as Sphaeraster scutatus by Hess (1975), Gaillard (1983) and Blake (1984); it was recombined as Echinosphaeraster scutatus by Gale (2021).
