Quadratonucula was named by Dickins (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u P Sakm-u]. Its type is Quadratonucula australiensis.

It was assigned to Malletiinae by Vokes (1980); to Nuculoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Malletiidae by Pagani (2004).
