Mycetophyllia inaequalis was named by Pratz (1910). Its type locality is Cerevic, Fruska Gora Mountains, which is in a Campanian shallow subtidal marl/limestone in Serbia and Montenegro.
It was recombined as Colpophyllia inaequalis by Baron-Szabo (2009).
