Taxonomy
Montastrea aokii was named by Eguchi (1951). Its type locality is Itsukaichi, which is in an Oxfordian/Tithonian perireef or subreef limestone in Japan.

It was recombined as Columnocoenia aokii by Baron-Szabo (2009).
