Taxonomy
Placocoenia orbitoides was named by Eguchi (1951). Its type locality is Koikorobe, Tanohata-mura, which is in an Aptian perireef or subreef sandstone in the Moshi Sandstone Formation of Japan.

It was recombined as Montastrea orbitoides by Baron-Szabo (2009).
