Acharax was named by Dall (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon R Sepkoski's reference number: 977]. It is extant. Its type is Solemya johnsoni.

It was reranked as Solemya (Acharax) by Kuroda (1948).

It was assigned to Solemyacidae by Olsson (1931); to Solemya by Kuroda (1948); to Solemyoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Solemyidae by Vokes (1980), Coan et al. (2000), Spencer et al. (2004), Huber (2010), Coan and Valentich-Scott (2012) and Kiel and Taviana (2018).
