Tympanuchus was named by Gloger (1841). It is extant. Its type is Tetrao cupido.
It was assigned to Gallinae by Shufeldt (1891); to Tetraonidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Miller (1944), Wetmore (1956) and Parmalee and Klippel (1982); and to Phasianidae by Parmalee (1992), Wang et al. (2013) and Clements et al. (2017).
