Ortyx picta was named by Douglas (1829). It is extant. It is the type species of Oreortyx.
It was recombined as Oreortyx picta by Hay (1930), Schultz and Howard (1935), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942) and Eo et al. (2009); it was recombined as Oreortyx pictus by Wetmore (1956) and Clements et al. (2017).
